NO FEEs!

There has been a growing interest in the Fort over the past couple of years in the field style of the game with several Rebels' players competing with the Edmonton Razorback program. If interest supports it, we may have Fort Saskatchewan teams at the Novice, Pee Wee and Bantam levels this year. For now just come out and try it. The rules are slightly different but it is a great way to get out and enjoy the sun!

The rules for girls' field lacrosse are also different. If we get the numbers, we will split the girls off to work on their style of play.

Times:

Novice and under: 6pm to 7pm

Pee Wee and older: 7 pm to 9pm

All specialized equipment will be there to try. Just bring a regular lacrosse stick, gloves and a helmet.

Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, April 10, 2011 (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) –The Fort Saskatchewan Rebels Lacrosse club is continuing to enjoy unprecedented interest in the sport. Boasting a 65% increase in registration since 2009 and the top Facebook membership of any association in the province, lacrosse has moved from a niche sport to the main stream in the City.

As of April 8th, more than 280 children have registered across eleven divisions, from mini-tyke to Junior B. “It is refreshing to see that interest is growing, especially in non-traditional areas such as the girls divisions and junior,” says Rebels’ President Kent Proctor. "Our girls numbers have exploded! This year we are going to be able to fill league teams in Girls’ Novice, Pee Wee and Bantam." Based on these numbers, the Rebels have registered an unprecedented 21 teams into play in the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council (GELC) league.

“We really are the envy of the league right now, most clubs have levelled off in terms of participation, but the Rebels and the Parkland Posse continue to grow at an impressive pace.” adds Kevin Parker, club Vice-President. “We are the only club in the GELC that will be fielding both Junior B Tier 1 and Tier 2 clubs. We had another really active winter of drop-in sessions (Monday’s at DCC) where we have had more than 100 participants most nights.” continues Parker.

Masters Ladies Lacrosse Launched

There is something different about Fort Saskatchewan’s Sportsplex these days. It is not the annual renewal of lacrosse in the City. It isn’t the presence of Moms in an arena in our town. It’s the combination that has people talking! 41 ladies, in their 20s, 30s and 40s, have signed up to try lacrosse once a week and more seem interested all the time. They practice and play for an hour per week and they are having a ball.

It started with a conversation between Kevin Parker – Vice President of the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels Lacrosse, and Nikki Hammel – active sports minded Mom of two. “I asked Nikki if there would be interest to keep their successful ‘Babes on Blades’ women’s’ hockey drop-in program going as spring lacrosse drop in. It kind of exploded from there!”, says Parker with surprise. “I thought maybe Nikki could find a dozen women who would like to come out and try it; all of a sudden we have enough for two full teams.”

Parker has coached minor lacrosse in the Fort for the past eight seasons helping his and hundreds of other kids to learn and love the game, but this is a bit different. “They were looking for something active, something different and something social.” Lacrosse fit the bill!

“Everyone has been so helpful. The City made sure that we had floor time, coaches dove in, and the ladies have been so positive,” adds Parker. The drop-in coaching staff is pretty impressive with Parker, Kent Proctor (President of Fort Saskatchewan Rebels Lacrosse), Paul Crumback and Trevor Gordon (Head Coaches of the Fort’s Junior B teams) helping out.

‘Chicks with Sticks’, as it have been dubbed, is going full speed ahead. “We are ordering jerseys, we are looking at games with the Edmonton Masters Ladies team, we are not sure where this is going to go,” says Hamel with a big grin on her face and her lacrosse stick in her hand.

Rebels have their own “Come try girls lacrosse” Event!

The Fort Saskatchewan Rebels Lacrosse Club is inviting all girls hockey and ringette players, aged 6 to 13, to a “Come try girls lacrosse” session on Tuesday Feb 8th @ 6:45-7:45 pm at the Win Ferguson Gym.
About lacrosse...

For those of you not familiar with the sport of lacrosse, it is very similar to ringette and hockey in many ways and has many skills that are complimentary. Hockey and ringette players tend to do very well at lacrosse because of this and the conditioning aspect of the sport has been endorsed by many professional and amateur athletes players. Girls lacrosse has surged in popularity in the last couple of years and the greater Edmonton league (GELC) now has all-girl teams starting at Novice age continuing up to Midget. It is a very physical sport but recent rule changes have limited contact at the Tyke, Novice and Peewee levels. The season typically lasts from mid April to the end of June with one game and practice per week on average.

Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, August 30, 2010 (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) –The Fort Saskatchewan Rebels Lacrosse club would like to congratulate Tylen Dewilde, Lyndon Parker, Liam McGarva, William Kelly, Brayden Parker, Brayden Roque, Maurice Kelly and Dustin MacLean on a great showing at the Alberta Provincial Field Lacrosse Championships held August 20 – 22 in Calgary.

The Novice team won the best of three gold medal final against the Calgary Cowboys by winning the first two games by scores of 11-4 and 8-6. Fort Saskatchewan players provided an enormous contribution with Tylen Dewilde and William Kelly shutting down much of the Calgary offence with their strong play at ‘long pole’. Lyndon Parker and Liam McGarva lead the way on offense with four goals and five assists, respectively.

“This was an incredible experience for the boys,” noted Kevin Parker, Novice and Pee Wee Razorback Assistant Coach. “Only three players on the Novice and Pee Wee teams had ever played field lacrosse before this year but their skill from box lacrosse came shining through.”
