FAQ > 2011 Grass Roots Field Program > What is the Grass Roots Field Program?
The Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council is in the second year of trying to revive field lacrosse across the Greater Edmonton Area. In 2010, attempts were made to set up pickup leagues at the Novice, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget levels. The GELC scheduler ensured that all box teams would not have games on Wednesday nights to help availability.
Due to concerns about travel and busy schedules, the program morphed into a Novice-Pee Wee, Bantam-Midget drop in program held every Wednesday night at the GELC office in Edmonton. While limited in success, the program did result in breeding enough interest to form Novice and Pee Wee Edmonton Razorbacks teams for provincial competition. Eight Rebels players took part and were strong contributors with the Novice's winning the provincial crown!
This year, the focus is to try to get more kids out to try field with less of a commitment required. Every box team will be invited to a Division day. That is, Novices will have a day (Saturday or Sunday) where all box teams will be invited to participate in a skills and fun day in Edmonton. Pee Wees, Bantams and Midgets will have a similar opportunity, throughout May or June.
The hope is that this format will allow for greater participation and encourage even more turnout and success for the Razorback program.
