2011 Pee Wee Lacrosse

Backgrounder

Pee Wee Lacrosse is open to all kids, boys and girls, born in 1999 or 2000.

Pee Wee lacrosse is changing in Fort Saskatchewan. Till now, Fort players have competed on parity teams in the ‘B’ league of the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Association. Attempts were made to make these teams as even as possible and we have been very successful, winning or placing among the top teams year after year.

In the past couple of years, many parents have asked of a more intense opportunity for some of the stronger players. The GELC has three tiers – A, B and C – to meet this desire across the Edmonton region. Based on this request the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels are embarking on this change. GELC regulations state that if a member organization has one team at an age level, it must play ‘B’. If they have two teams, they must have either two parity ‘B’ teams or one ‘A’ and one ‘C’. (Special permission has been given in the past to allow clubs to field an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team.) With three teams, a club must have one in each of ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’.

We expect to have enough registrations for three Pee Wee teams, thus an ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. If we are only able to field two teams, they will be entered in ‘A’ and ‘C’.

To help with understanding this new development, we would like to outline some of the basic expectations associated with each level.

Evaluations will be undertaken in March to assign players among the three teams. Key areas that will be evaluated will include, in no particular order, shooting velocity/accuracy, passing/receiving, foot speed, ball handling, attitude, coachability and understanding of the game. The evaluation process will be distributed prior to the event to ensure overall transparency and fairness.  Attempts are currently underway to secure outside evaluators, but success may be limited due to our lack of resources to pay evaluators.

We recognize that it is healthy for children to have a diversity of interests. Lacrosse often seems to be competing with soccer, baseball and spring hockey for the time and interest of players and their parents. We will make every accommodation possible to allow players to meet commitments to other sports and cultural activities. Please ensure that your child’s coach is aware of any competing commitments so that accommodations may be made.
